I totally agree with you... it was horrible... and apparently there're no alternatives to make Android apps other than this little piece of developers' Hell... (nice shot about 1989's GUI :-P )

Re: The Horror of Android Development

Coding should be easy and fast like VB6 if Google wants success. It is 2010. There is no reason for overly complex programming. Unless you are an uber geek who enjoys boasting.

Currently the SDK is a bloody mess. It is no surprise that the apps on the market pretty much suck.

Re: The Horror of Android Development

I haven't made an Android app yet but I'm thinking about it. And the IDE being Eclipse would be a big plus for me! I use Eclipse for all of my coding (with the FDT plugin for Actionscript, Aptana for HTML/JS/CSS/PHP and JDT for the occasional bit of Java) and I really like it as an IDE. Maybe I just got used to it - I remember it being overwhelming when I first started. But the only other IDE I've used which comes close is Visual Studio for C# coding - and I still I prefer Eclipse.

That said, I haven't got as far as downloading the Android SDK yet and it sounds like all your other points are valid... So maybe I won't be building an Android app even if I when I do find some spare time...

Re: The Horror of Android Development

Oh, thank God I'm not alone!! I really, really want to like android, even though I find Java class heirarchies are usually between 3 and 666 times deeper than they should be. But every time I try to complain how hard Google have made it for me to like Android, some fanboy always runs past and kicks me in the
shin...
